Dogs and humans have basically the same needs, with some considerable differences in the relative importance of those needs. I’ve based this section on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to underscore their universality I have confessed below the many times I have failed to meet my dogs’ needs, so that you will know that I understand that no one gets it right 100% of the time.
Dogs need regular mealtimes. I ha a Goldendoodle named Teddy, whose dinnertime was 5:00 p.m. and whose internal clock was set to exactly 5:00 p.m. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. each day, he would stare at me and pant. He would start to squirm around and whine at 4:45 pm and go bonkers if his dinner was not served until 5:01 p.m.
